What an Office Break Room Upgrade Taught Me About Total Cost of Ownership

Last January, I found myself standing in an empty break room with a $4,000 budget, a list of complaints from 60 employees, and a moving crew waiting to bring everything up. The previous admin had left us with a microwave that died after two years, a discount juicer that was already making weird noises, and a storage room that smelled like a damp basement.

Here's something vendors won't tell you: the headline features on a spec sheet are rarely the ones that decide how long a product lasts. Motor type, compressor quality, inverter technology—those are the boring details that determine whether something survives three years or ten. You have to dig for them.

The first real test came in September, when our copier lease came up for renewal. The old lease was $300 per month and the machine broke down twice. The new lease costs $375 per month but includes service and a guaranteed response time.
